And it works, sorta, but unlike doing it on a hill (where you can take a couple pedal strokes to recover a failing interval), if you get behind the gear, erg mode drives you into the ground. I was hoping erg mode would be good for doing muscle tension workouts indoors, which is really the only workout I would do indoors that I can't otherwise effectively do. The game makes time pass by "in real time" for me, whereas I've got games I play based on my workout, what I'm watching, or what I'm listening to that help compress time a bit. I've tried Zwift multiple times since the "Zwift beta" days and it doesn't do anything for me personally. I find them far more mentally taxing than my other indoor tools: If I am just doing a zone2 ride, being able to pick a gear and a cadence and not have to worry about it for the entirety of the ride is a massive benefit when compared to accidentally pushing zone4 because you weren't paying attention to an upcoming hill When I am training, the point is to hit a certain wattage and get fitter. I live in a small house, so I usually put the trainer / mats / fan away after I am done a ride, having to unplug it is annoying, and I'm sure is also one of the reasons why my calibration is constantly a problem.Īll of the annoyances just to have 'simulated hills' to me is not worth it in any sense.I have an hour to do a workout, not 10 minutes to warm up, 5 minutes to calibrate, and then an hour to do a workout. Having to "warm the trainer up" is annoying. If I am doing proper training with ERG mode, sometimes the trainer calibration just screws up and breaks, and I am crushing 600+w on my power meter when the trainer shows 300 or something, and then the trainer makes things more difficult to compensate so I can reach the target watts, and this is a death spiral into my having to push 1000 watts or just stop. This might be specific to my trainer, but the calibration sucks and constantly gives me problems.I hit a small section of rolling 2% hills and I have to shift around to accommodate the slight changes, where on the fluid trainer it was just a slight increase/decrease in speed if I held my same wattage. I learned I don't want to micro-manage my gears when I am training indoors. The Fluid Trainer felt like once I hit a certain cadence, holding a certain wattage (roughly), I was on the flats, I was just going. I feel like I am constantly riding uphill, or against wind or something. Then, I upgraded to a JetBlack VOLT smart trainer, and I hate it. Then, I got a power meter and used that with my Kurt Kinetic and it was an improvement (even if the reality was a 15% reduction in my FTP haha). 4 of them I used "zPower" or whatever on TrainerRoad, the fake, calculated power from your speed. I had a Kurt Kinetic Fluid trainer for about 7 years. I'll probably be going against the grain here, but in my honest opinion, no.
